International Women’s Day
A Moment to Recognise the Women Around Us
International Women’s Day is marked each year on March 8. It is a day that recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also highlighting the continued importance of gender equality around the world.
The 2026 Theme: Balance the Scales
The 2026 theme, “Balance the Scales,” focuses on the importance of creating a fair and inclusive justice system for women and girls.
It is a reminder that while progress has been made, equality is still something that requires attention, advocacy and ongoing work.
A Global Day of Reflection
Around the world, International Women’s Day is marked through rallies, conferences, community gatherings and conversations that encourage reflection on the role women play in shaping society.
Women contribute in countless ways - through leadership, innovation, creativity, care and the everyday roles they hold within families and communities.
Some women lead organisations, run businesses, practise specialised professions, conduct research, create art or shape the direction of industries.
The Contributions We Don’t Always See
Women also contribute in ways that are quieter but no less important - caring for children, supporting partners and families, assisting ageing parents, volunteering in their communities, and offering practical and emotional support to the people around them.
Much of this work happens behind the scenes, yet it forms the foundation of how families and communities function.
The Women We Meet Every Day
In my work, I have the privilege of meeting women from many different backgrounds.
Many are highly accomplished - leaders, professionals and innovators in their own right. Most are navigating the complex balance of work, family, relationships and personal growth.
What they share is a commitment to showing up in their lives with strength, determination and care for themselves and for the people around them.
Taking a Moment to Recognise
International Women’s Day provides a moment to pause and recognise the women who shape our lives - colleagues, friends, mothers, daughters, mentors and community members.
It is also a moment to reflect on the importance of fairness, opportunity and respect for women everywhere.
Here’s to celebrating women and the many ways they shape the world around us.
